It started as a weekend build, almost a joke.

Could a phone camera actually tell a farmer what was wrong with a leaf? It worked well enough to keep going.

The origin story

What began as a single disease-detection tool — point a basic smartphone at a leaf, get an instant read on what’s wrong — grew past its own scope. Farmers didn’t just want to know what was happening to their own plant. They wanted to know what was happening around them.

So the system grew with them: from “here’s what’s wrong with your plant” to “here’s what’s happening in your area.” An outbreak-alert layer — warning farmers when disease was spreading nearby, not just diagnosing their own crop — was built into an earlier version of the product. It worked. It’s the clearest evidence we have that this problem is bigger than diagnosis alone.

That earlier version is what most people who know CropCare know today. It’s being rebuilt now — not refreshed, rebuilt — for a public relaunch within 6 months, meaningfully better than before. But the more important shift isn’t the rebuild. It’s what the rebuild sits inside: not a single app anymore, but a research lab with a mission broad enough to hold what comes after it.

Why this has to be a lab

Single-purpose tools stop at the first problem they solve.

Existing tools like Plantix and PlantVillage picked one narrow problem — diagnosis — and stopped there. That’s a reasonable place to start. It’s not a reasonable place to stop, because a farmer’s problems don’t stop there either: what’s wrong with this leaf is connected to what’s in the soil, what the water looks like, and what the harvest is likely to be. Treat those as separate apps and you lose the connections between them.

Most agricultural AI is also built for input-rich conditions — stable connectivity, clean sensor data, large mechanized farms — and then scaled down for everyone else. We think that’s backwards. Agricultural intelligence has to be built for the world’s most common farm from the start: a smallholder plot, patchy connectivity, mixed cropping, a basic smartphone. Not adapted downward from enterprise agtech — designed for this reality from the first line of code.

That’s the case for a lab instead of an app company: treating agriculture’s interlocking problems as one research agenda, with named programs and a shared thesis, rather than a portfolio of disconnected point solutions.
